Responsible Roofing Removal and Repairs

Roofing removal sounds like a hectic process, but it doesn't have to be. Learn how to remove your roof efficiently and responsibly.

DIY roofing repairs can be an excellent way to breathe new life into your home, but before you get started, it is important to understand the proper procedure so that you can complete the project safely and efficiently.

Preparation

Preparation is important to keep wood, nails, and other debris away from your flowerbeds and other exterior landscaping features. Cover your yard and garden with tarps and your windows, air conditioning units, and other vulnerable spots with plywood. A little preparation will make cleaning up a breeze. Be sure to install roof jacks and wear a harness while you are working.

Stripping the Roof

When you strip the shingles off your roof, start at the peak and work your way down. Use a roofing shovel or fork to get under the shingles and pry them off. Once you have reached the roof jacks, remove them. Strip the shingles from the edges, but be careful not to damage existing flashing, or weatherproofing. This material is typically found around chimneys, vents, and valleys. If you don't plan on reusing the flashing, remove it.

Disposal

Depending on the size of your project, a rental dumpster could be the most affordable and efficient way to dispose of debris. While you work, toss the old shingles and valley flashing from the roof to the dumpster. Make sure your bin is placed in appropriate proximity to your work site to make this process easier.

Clean the Surface

Use a broom to clean the surface of the roof. Walk very carefully across the entire roof and check for protruding nails. Look for rotting boards or any other problem areas that require attention, and replace damaged sections of wood as needed. Rotten or broken boards pose a serious risk to the integrity of your roof.

Buttoning Up

Buttoning up is the final phase before shingle installation. This phase of roofing repairs involves installing an ice and water barrier and an asphalt layer. This barrier is critical because it keeps any water that may slip through the shingles away from the wood. Once this layer is applied, clean the debris and nails, and install the shingles.

DIY roofing repairs require specialized tools, materials, and skills. With the right preparation and organization, you can experience the satisfaction that comes with completing home improvement projects on your own.

  1. You definitely need a rental dumpster for a big job like this. Don't be "that guy" who doesn't dispose of his roofing materials properly!
