Do I Need A Dumpster For My Home Improvement Project?

Certain home improvement projects require dumpster rental. Kitchen and bathroom remodels, roof replacements, and new floors often require waste removal.

A recent survey by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) found that the average buyer stays in a home for around 13 years before moving out. In all that time, homeowners typically complete dozens, perhaps even hundreds, of small repairs, updates, and renovations. But when the project is extensive, the homeowner may have to rent a dumpster.

What Kind Of Jobs Require Dumpsters?

Generally speaking, homeowners don't need large metal receptacles for small decorating projects. Repainting a room, putting up new wallpaper, even converting an unused space to a home office should not produce an excessive amount of waste. With that said, most large or medium-size, remodeling projects require a residential dumpster. Here are several examples:

Kitchen Remodel: Ripping out old tile, countertops, cabinets, and appliances will leave you with a small mountain of waste. Because it's not the contractor's job to dispose of it for you, ordering a dumpster is imperative.

New Floors: Whether you intend to put in tile, laminate, carpet, or wood floors, the leftovers must be put somewhere.

Bathroom Remodel: It might offer a great return on investment, but redoing your master bathroom will also leave you with a lot of waste. You must pay a professional to haul away old tiles, fixtures, pipes, etc.

Roof Work: If you are considering major roof repair or replacement, it is important to have a dumpster in place before workers arrive. After all, old shingles with nails stuck in them aren't the safest things to have piled up on your lawn.

When doing home repairs on older homes it is also a good idea to have it inspected to ensure it is free of asbestos. Asbestos was commonly used in the building of older homes and it is now known to be extremely hazardous and requires special handling and disposal.

What Size Dumpster Do I Need?

Now that you know when you might need a receptacle, it's time to talk about size. Dumpster size is measured in cubic yards, and generally ranges from 4 to 40 yards for residential models. As you might imagine, the size you need depends on the size of your project. Here are a few of the most popular sizes and the jobs they are best suited for:

-10-Yard Dumpster. It might sound large, but this 10-foot long metal box doesn't hold all that much. As such, it's best for small jobs like redoing a guest bathroom or re-tiling the kitchen floor.

- 20-Yard Dumpster. At twice the size, this model can handle most medium-size remodeling jobs. It could, for example, accommodate the waste from a significant re-shingling job or a small kitchen remodel.

- 30-Yard Dumpster. Probably the most popular size, the 30-yard dumpster service has the space for a good amount of carpet, shingles, drywall, and wood. It can also be used to dispose of demolition debris, which is often required in large remodel jobs.

- 40-Yard Dumpster. It may take up most of your driveway, but if you're planning to put in a large deck, a new kitchen, or a master bathroom, this bin service should suffice.

How To Proceed

If you do not have space in your driveway for a large dumpster, you may need to put it on the street. But before you do, it's important to check with your local parking enforcement office about permits. It is also imperative that you clear space in front of the place the container will occupy before the rental company drops it off. If you don't, and the driver has to do it himself, you may be charged an extra fee.
